Why you should download the What3Words app today.

When an emergency happens, being able to tell first responders exactly where you are can save a life. But what if you’re on a rural road, travelling through regional NSW, or exploring a national park with no obvious street signs? That’s where the What3Words app becomes a game changer.

What3Words is a free app that has divided the entire world into a grid of 3m x 3m squares, giving each square a unique combination of three everyday words.

Instead of trying to describe your location or read out complicated GPS coordinates, you can share three simple words such as: ➡ ///apple.tiger.river. Those three words tell emergency services your precise location, down to a three-metre square.

In many emergencies, the hardest part for paramedics isn’t providing care, it’s finding the person who needs help. This is especially true in regional and rural areas. For example, imagine a breakdown or medical emergency on a quiet road outside Bathurst, or an injury while hiking in bushland. Without a clear address, every minute spent searching is a minute without treatment.

What3Words helps solve that problem by making your exact location easy to communicate and easy to find.

How to Use What3Words If You Need Help

Using the app in an emergency is very simple:

  • Download What3Words (iPhone or Android)

  • Open the app and allow location access

  • Read the three words displayed on screen

  • Call 000 and share those words with the operator

  • Help can then be dispatched to your exact location

Many Australian emergency services already use What3Words, including police, fire, ambulance, and State Emergency Service teams.

Everyday Situations Where It Helps

What3Words can be useful for more than life-threatening emergencies. It’s also helpful for:

  • Roadside assistance

  • Bushwalking and camping trips

  • Meeting friends in large parks or event spaces

  • Locating injured wildlife

  • Farm, acreage, or worksite incidents

  • Guiding delivery drivers to rural properties

It’s a tool you hope you never need but will be thankful to have from the very first time you use it
